Balenciaga Washed Multicolor T-Shirt Collection Review: 400 g Combed Cotton, Measured Flat, and Why We Sized Down

We ordered two colorways from the 22-option Balenciaga washed tee run, weighed them on the bench and measured every seam. The 400 g combed cotton and embroidery hold up; the drop-shoulder cut does not behave like a normal size chart.

Editor verdict

A heavyweight washed cotton tee with clean stitching and honest graphics, undercut by a loose collar rib, a printed care label, and a cut that runs a full size large. Size down and check the collar close-up.

Trade-offs at a glance
What works
  • Dense, dry combed cotton with clean shoulder, sleeve and hem stitching on both samples.
  • Embroidery and patch appliqué trimmed properly, with no UV glare from the chest print.
  • Cold wash produced about 1 cm of shrinkage and no print cracking over four cycles.
Watch-outs
  • Collar rib is looser than the dense knit documented on authentic versions of this line.
  • Printed care label formatting is off — a recognised replica tell on this product.
  • 400 g+ only holds at size L and above; our size M weighed 389 g.

Balenciaga Washed Multicolor T-Shirt Collection Review: 400 g Combed Cotton, Measured Flat, and Why We Sized Down

Twenty-two colorways is a strange thing to test. The Balenciaga washed T-shirt collection is not one product so much as a roster: bandage prints, M-bean lettering, blurred cola, Coke embroidery, sunset Eiffel Tower, WFP, 01 jersey, reflective IB. We ordered two of them through the Litbuy agent — the washed 3D bandage in black (size M) and the Coke embroidery in black (size L) — because a single sample tells you about a garment, while two tell you whether a factory is holding a standard.

The listing is unpromising on paper: $24.18 against a $27.35 original price, 400 g+ fabric, S–XXXL, a 1–3 cm tolerance note, and a photograph of a black tee with a large white chest graphic. Most of that turned out to be true, with one important qualifier about the weight and a much larger one about the fit.

What arrived, and how it compares to the warehouse photos

Both parcels cleared customs on a Tuesday and were opened the same day. Each tee came in a plain inner bag with a hang tag, no box, no tissue. We printed the warehouse QC images and laid them beside the garment before touching a tape measure, which is the only reliable way to see what changed between the agent's photo and the parcel.

On both colorways, stitching was the strongest result. The shoulder seams were straight, the sleeve hems sat level, and the hem stitch ran at a consistent width with no skipped points. Print placement matched the QC photos to within about 4 mm on the chest graphic. What differed was the collar: the rib knit on our M sample was visibly more open than the dense, tight collar you would expect at the top of this brand's range, and that appeared in the photographs as well, so it is a factory characteristic rather than transit damage.

Measured flat, size M, after one cold wash

PointBefore washAfter cold wash and line dry
Pit-to-pit61.5 cm61.0 cm
Body length (high point shoulder)72.5 cm71.4 cm
Shoulder width55.8 cm55.8 cm
Collar opening (laid flat)12.7 cm13.1 cm
Sleeve length from shoulder21.5 cm21.3 cm
Weight (0.1 g scale)389 g382 g

Doubling the pit-to-pit gives roughly a 123 cm chest circumference, or a little over 48 inches — a genuinely oversized body on a size M. The declared 1–3 cm tolerance is generous enough to explain the small movement after washing, but not the overall scale. Our size L measured 412 g and 64 cm pit-to-pit, which is where the "400 g and above" claim starts to hold. If you buy a small size expecting a 400 g tee, expect closer to 390 g.

Bench note: the two colorways weighed 23 g apart in different sizes, so treat the weight figure as a band, not a promise attached to every option in the run.

Fabric, print and hardware

The cloth is a combed cotton single jersey with a dry, slightly rough hand that softens after the first wash — consistent with the washed finish in the name rather than a smooth retail-blank feel. Under the UV torch, neither the chest print nor the patch appliqué on the washed 3D bandage showed the bright fluorescent glare of a cheap plastisol overlay. Edges of the embroidered Coke lettering were clean, with no loose thread tails on the reverse and a stabiliser backing trimmed close to the stitch block.

The patch detail is the place to look hardest. Appliqué panels are sewn, not fused, and the stitch density around the border is where a rushed batch shows itself: ours was even on both samples, but the run covers 22 colorways built from at least three different decoration methods, and we only inspected two. Print alignment and embroidery registration on the colorway you actually order remain a check you have to run yourself against the warehouse photos.

No metal hardware is involved — this is a pullover with a ribbed round neck, so the hardware checkpoint on our list resolved to the neck rib and the care label. The label is the weakest item in the parcel: printed, not woven, and the spacing on the size line reads tighter than the format documented in published authentication guides for this brand. That is a known replica tell and it is present here. It does not affect wear; it does affect how the shirt reads to anyone who turns the collar over.

Fit: the real story of this collection

Both samples run large, and not by a small margin. Our M fits like a roomy L from a typical high-street label, with a dropped shoulder that puts the seam well past the shoulder bone and a wide collar opening that sits toward the collarbone. Owner reports elsewhere describe the same thing: a 183 cm wearer in size S describing the shirt as fitting like a sack, and sizing guides putting these tees roughly 1–1.5 sizes above standard Asian high-street labelling.

We would not size down twice, but we would size down once, and anyone under about 175 cm should consider two steps down or accept a deliberately oversized silhouette. The 5-inch collar opening also means the neckline moves when you lean; on a smaller frame it will look wide rather than relaxed. Sleeve length is short relative to the body, which is what produces the boxy, stacked look the collection is styled around in the listing photos.

Wash behaviour and durability so far

We cold-washed the M at 30 °C on a short cycle and line-dried it flat. Shrinkage came to roughly 1 cm in length and half a centimetre in the chest — inside the stated tolerance and consistent with buyer reports of near-zero shrink on this line after a cold wash. Warm water is the risk here, and the caution is widely repeated by owners of these tees. After four wear-and-wash cycles, the print has not cracked at the fold lines and the collar has relaxed slightly but not stretched out of shape.

What we cannot tell you yet is how the embroidery and patch options behave over a season, or whether the reflective IB colorway performs the way its name suggests. Those are single-sample unknowns, and we would rather flag them than guess.

Where the value sits

At $24.18 this is a heavyweight, correctly patterned tee with clean construction and a very wide colorway spread, and the two samples we handled support that. The gaps are the collar rib density, the printed care label, and a size chart that will mislead anyone who orders their usual letter. Order one size down, ask the agent for a collar close-up before shipping, and check print registration against the warehouse photos when the parcel lands. Do that and the collection is a reasonable buy; skip the checks and the sizing alone can waste the order.

Frequently asked

  1. Should I size down in this Balenciaga washed tee?
Yes, once. Our size M measured 61.5 cm pit-to-pit before washing and fits like a roomy high-street L. Under about 175 cm, consider going down two sizes or accepting a deliberately oversized look.
  2. Did the cotton shrink when you washed it?
Cold-washing at 30 °C and line-drying cost about 1 cm of body length and half a centimetre of chest on our M sample. Warm water is the documented risk with this cotton, so keep it cold.
  3. What should I inspect when the parcel arrives?
Collar rib density, the printed care label's size-line formatting, and print or embroidery registration against the warehouse QC photos. Our two samples passed stitching and print placement but not the collar and label checks.
