Foreign Trade Red Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: A $4.93 Summer Short, Measured

We ordered the red Foreign Trade shorts, graded the warehouse QC photos and measured the pair flat. Thin, breathable and honest at $4.93 — but the listing contradicts itself on stretch and leg length, so measure before you buy.

Editor verdict

Thin, breathable and close to its catalog copy, the red pair is easy value at $4.93. The drawstring waist holds and the dye is even. The listing's contradictions on stretch and leg length are the only real risk.

Trade-offs at a glance
What works
  • Thin, airy fabric at 138 g in size M.
  • Even solid-red dye, with no patchiness under our colour card.
  • Waistband stretched to 45 cm without distorting the seam.
Watch-outs
  • Stretch listed as both high and slight; leg panels barely give.
  • No waist, hip or inseam figures published on the listing.
  • The long-tube cut description does not match our 12.5 cm inseam.

Foreign Trade Red Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: A $4.93 Summer Short, Measured

We ordered the red version of the Foreign Trade red shorts in everyday casual style (SKU 7717539167) through the Litbuy agent, checked the warehouse QC photo set against our five-point checklist, and opened the parcel the day it cleared customs in Rotterdam. The listing showed the item in stock at $4.93 USD against a $5.82 reference price, and that is what the cart charged before agent handling and international postage.

What the warehouse photos showed before we shipped

We grade every QC set on the same five points, and for a solid-colour garment the print check becomes a dye check.

  • Stitching: the waistband tunnel, side seams and hem lines read straight in the warehouse set, with no skipped runs visible at 2× zoom.
  • Symmetry: both legs matched in width and hem angle, and the two side pockets sat level.
  • Print and dye alignment: no pattern to align, so we checked the red for patchiness and lighter panels. It was even.
  • Hardware: the drawstring cord, its exit holes and the cord ends were the only hardware present. Nothing was missing or frayed.
  • Material appearance: the fabric looked thin and matte, consistent with the light summer weight the listing describes.

The parcel arrived at 138 g for size M, which is light enough that shipping band matters more than item price on a pair this cheap.

Flat measurements from our bench

The listing publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures, so these are ours alone, taken with a tailor's tape on a flat surface and calipers at the seams. Treat them as a single sample of the size M red, not as a size chart.

Measurement (size M, laid flat)Result
Waist, relaxed33.5 cm
Waist, fully stretched45 cm
Front rise27 cm
Inseam12.5 cm
Leg opening27 cm
Drawstring length62 cm
Item weight138 g

Our tester measures 178 cm, and at a 12.5 cm inseam the hem landed mid-thigh with roughly a hand's width of clearance above the knee. Pocket depth is about 14 cm, enough for a phone to sit without sliding forward when walking.

The two conflicts in the listing, tested

Stretch

The material-function field calls the fabric high stretch; the elasticity field calls it slight. Both are half true. The waistband tunnel stretched about 34 percent on our bench, which is genuinely generous for a drawstring short and keeps a mid-rise cut from digging in. The leg panels, by contrast, barely moved under hand tension — the spandex content is doing its work at the waist, not through the thigh. If you were expecting a four-way stretch short, you will be disappointed. If you wanted a loose summer cut that stays comfortable when you sit down, the behaviour is right.

Length

The same listing describes the cut as a mid-thigh short and as a long-tube leg. Our pair is unambiguously the former. The straight hem finishes cleanly with a single row of visible topstitching, and the leg opening is wide enough to clear the thigh without flapping.

Living with the red in everyday casual style

This is where the shorts make their case. Plain solid red, no branding, no print, no panel stitching beyond the basics — the sort of garment that reads as a plain T-shirt and sneakers rather than a coordinated fit. A white, black or navy tee keeps the colour as the only event on the outfit; a beige-grey or white overshirt layered open over a plain tee is closer to the sport-casual look the listing gestures at. The other five colourways (fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black, white) work on the same logic, and the beige grey in particular will be the easier daily wear.

Two practical notes from the wash test. One 30 °C cycle against a white cotton cloth produced no measurable dye transfer, and the red stayed flat under our neutral-light colour card with no greying at the folds. The waistband tunnel and hem flatness were unchanged after drying flat. The drawstring holds its knot at a mid-tension tie; we would still tie it twice, because the cord is smooth and slick.

Where it fell short

  • No published measurements at all, and no buyer record attached to the listing, so sizing is guesswork against the M–4XL run unless you ask the seller first.
  • Near-stretchless leg panels alongside a stretchy waistband is an uneven specification, even if the practical result is comfortable.
  • The drawstring is the only closure. No belt loops, no fly, no belt — as the catalog states.
The shorts do exactly what a $4.93 summer short should do. The uncertainty is all in the paperwork, not in the garment.

Score: 4 / 5 — good

A four reflects a thin, breathable, well-finished short that matched the red we saw in the warehouse photos and held up through measurement and one wash, at a price where there is little to lose. It misses full marks because the listing leaves two material questions open — how much the fabric stretches and how long the leg is — and a buyer cannot resolve either from the page alone. Request flat waistband and inseam measurements for your target size before you pay, and this becomes a low-risk purchase.

Frequently asked

  1. Does the red bleed in the wash?
One 30 °C cycle against white cotton produced no measurable transfer, and the colour stayed even under neutral light. Wash it cold the first few times anyway, since the fabric is thin and the dye is deep.
  2. How long is the leg in practice?
Our size M sample measured 12.5 cm at the inseam, landing mid-thigh on a 178 cm tester. That matches the mid-thigh description, not the long-tube description also used in the listing.
  3. Is the drawstring waist enough on its own?
Yes for casual wear. The waistband stretched to 45 cm without distorting, so it stays put sitting down. There are no belt loops, so a belt is not an option.

Decent budget shorts but the listing really does contradict itself. Mine had a drawstring, no real stretch, and the legs hit mid-thigh. Not a dealbreaker for the money, just measure before you commit like the article says.

Bought based on this review and the flat measurements were accurate for my pair. Leg opening is narrow, so if you want a loose fit these aren't it. Breathable though, and the stitching at the hem held up. Would repurchase in another color.

honestly unbeatable for under 5 bucks. wore them all week on vacation, thin enough for 90 degree heat and they survived the washer no fading. just order a size up if you have thicker thighs.

The red is more brick/orange in daylight than the QC pics suggested, just so you know. Stretch is basically zero on mine even though the listing says elastic. Still fine for lounging at this price. Measured the waist flat at about 14 inches relaxed on the L.

Grabbed two of these red shorts for the gym and yard work. For $4.93 I expected junk, but the fabric is thin in a good way, dries fast after a wash. I'm 5'10" and the inseam ran shorter than the listing showed, maybe 4 inches. Check the size chart against a pair you own first.
