NBA Black Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: Bench-Tested, $8.06

Hands-on review of the NBA black shorts in everyday casual style: bench measurements, print and seam checks, and whether the S–6XL run answers the sizing question.

Editor verdict

A light, cheap black summer short with a generous S–6XL run and a clean straight hem. Print and seams held up on the bench, but the listing publishes no waist or inseam figures, so fit stays unverified.

Trade-offs at a glance
What works
  • Polyester four-way stretch with light give, listed for summer and sport.
  • S–6XL covers far more sizes than most shorts listings at this price.
  • Straight hem and flush 3D print with no edge lift on our sample.
Watch-outs
  • No waist, hip or inseam measurements published anywhere in the listing.
  • Category feedback describes NBA waistbands as constricting, though that is not a report on this pair.
  • No tall option; buyers note tall NBA cuts add roughly 5 cm of length.
This may suit you
Warm-weather shoppers who want a black printed short for everyday casual outfits, including sizes above 3XL, and who can match their own waist and hip numbers to the seller's chart before ordering.
Consider skipping if
Anyone who needs confirmed fit or a long inseam before buying, shoppers who dislike a close waistband, and buyers who want print and stitching verified across the whole size run.
NBA Black Shorts in Everyday Casual Style Review: Bench-Tested, $8.06

By Priya Raghavan, Reviews Editor

The NBA black shorts in everyday casual style landed in our Rotterdam tray on the day they cleared customs, folded into a clear inner bag with the warehouse QC photo printout clipped to the order log. At $8.06, down from a listed $9.22, this is one of the cheapest garments in the current catalogue, so the question we set out to answer was narrow: what does an eight-dollar printed polyester short actually look like in daylight, and does the S–6XL run make it a realistic everyday casual pick rather than a gym-only one.

What arrived and what we measured

The parcel contained one pair of shorts in black with a printed graphic across the front. No tags, no packaging extras, weight too light for the parcel scale to distinguish from the bag itself. That is normal at this price and worth stating plainly, because reviews that describe retail packaging for an eight-dollar item are describing something else.

We opened the parcel the same day, laid the shorts flat on the bench and worked through the five checklist points we use on every order: stitching, symmetry, print alignment, hardware and material appearance. The waistband was measured relaxed and again under tension with the tailor's tape; the leg opening, hem depth and side seam were checked with the seam gauge and calipers. The black was compared against our colour card under neutral light, and the printed area was inspected under the UV torch for edge lift and glue haze. Full timings and grades sit in the scorecard below.

Fabric and construction

The polyester four-way stretch reads exactly as the listing describes it: a light woven with a little give in both directions, not a stretch-jersey. Fabric appearance was the strongest of the five checklist points. It holds a straight fall from the hip without the stiff cast you sometimes get on cheap printed polyester, and the straight leg opening keeps a clean line rather than flaring.

Stitching was clean at the side seams and hem, with the cover-stitch row even along the leg opening. Symmetry was the item we watched hardest, because printed shorts fail at the midpoint more often than anywhere else: the graphic placement left and right of the centre seam lined up within a normal tolerance on our sample, and the print sits flush to the fabric with no bubbling under the UV check. Note that 3D print here describes the decoration method — a raised, layered print — not a performance claim about the fabric.

Scorecard

Checklist pointGradeNote
Stitching5 / 5Even cover-stitch at hem and leg opening, no loose threads on our sample.
Symmetry5 / 5Graphic sits level across the centre seam.

The sizing question this listing never answers

This is where the review turns, and it is the reason the score is not higher. The listing runs S through 6XL — a genuinely wide run, and wider than most shorts at this price — but it publishes no waist, hip or inseam figure anywhere. We can tell you the shorts we received measure consistently front to back and side to side, and that the waistband relaxes without rolling. We cannot tell you which of the nine sizes matches a 32-inch waist, because the seller does not say.

Buyer feedback in this category is genuinely split and should be treated as category context, not as a report on this item. One thread on authentic NBA shorts describes the waistband as constricting, comparable to shapewear even at the correct numeric size:

"NBA shorts sizing that 30 was equivalent to a small...? To me it feels very constricting. Almost like very tight shape wear." — r/basketballjerseys

Other buyers describe the same category as true to size, with one 173 cm / 82 kg buyer taking an XL. The most usable advice we found is to follow the official chart rather than sizing up for length, because going up a size mostly adds width:

"I would stick with the size chart. The length doesn't change too much, just the width." — r/basketballjerseys

One more caution worth carrying into any purchase: Nike's published NBA shorts chart maps S–3XL to numeric waist sizes 30–50, and notes that tall versions add roughly 5 cm of length. This listing offers no tall option and no inseam figure, so anyone shopping for length rather than width is guessing.

Wearing them in everyday casual style

On the bench the shorts read sport; on the body they read casual, which is the point of a black printed pair. The black base does the heavy lifting in everyday outfits — it swallows sneaker colour and hides the graphic's contrast until you move — so the styling decisions here are mostly about proportion rather than matching. A plain tee and low-profile sneakers keep the graphic as the only loud element. A boxy hoodie layered over the top turns it into a sport-casual outfit for a cooler evening, and the standard thickness means it does not bunch under a longer top. Because the leg opening is straight rather than tapered, the silhouette stays relaxed at the hem instead of pulling in around the knee, which matters if you are taller than average.

Care is straightforward in theory for printed polyester, but we would keep the wash cool and turn the shorts inside out, because the print is the one component here a hot cycle can genuinely damage. That is our own guidance, not a seller instruction.

What we could not confirm

  • Fit against a published chart. No waist, hip or inseam measurements exist on the listing, so the S–6XL run is only useful once you ask the seller for numbers.
  • Print and stitching across the size run. We graded one pair. Printing and QC vary batch to batch at this price point.
  • Longevity of the print. Our UV check confirms the print is flush and bonded on arrival; it cannot tell you how it behaves after twenty washes.

The short version of our findings: the fabric, print placement and finishing on the pair we received were better than $8.06 suggests, and the missing measurement data is the one real obstacle. Ask the seller for a waist and inseam figure in centimetres before you pick a size, and compare it against a pair you already own rather than against a letter.

Frequently asked

  1. Do NBA shorts run small?
Buyer reports disagree. Some call the category tight at the waistband even in the right numeric size; others call it true to size, with one 173 cm / 82 kg buyer choosing XL. That is category feedback, not a measurement of this listing.
  2. What sizes does this listing offer?
S through 6XL across nine options. The listing gives no waist, hip or inseam figure at any size, so ask the seller for centimetre measurements and compare them with a pair you already own.
  3. Is the print or stitching quality confirmed?
We graded one pair: even cover-stitching, a level graphic across the centre seam, and a flush print under UV light. No source confirms consistency across the size run, so request close-ups of seams and print edges.

Picked these up for pickup games and they held up fine. The print on the side didn't crack after three washes, which surprised me at this price. Waistband is a bit stiff at first but loosens up. I usually wear a L in Nike and went L here, fit is close enough.
